Bon Voyage!

Remember my buddy Joshua?!

The one who HAD Burkitt's Lymphoma?

Well, he's smiling for a very good reason.

Another limo is in his driveway ready to take him...NOT TO PHOENIX CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL this time.....

Oh, and his parents and sister and grandparents get to go.

On a very special cruise.

Here is one of their stops.

God's Word and Other Stuff

Encouragement for this Friday
Cor. 4:7-9

7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. 8 We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.

2 Cor. 12:9,10

9 And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

This and That

Why the Gerbera Daisies? Just cuz they are pretty!

*****

Only 10 more days of sock wearing for my children!! The uniform policy at our school requires all children to wear socks and gym shoes, my life has been torturous. I will promptly throw out all socks and start fresh in the fall. Ten more days and the flip flops take over the house. Maybe I'll throw out all of the old smelly gym shoes too!

*****

Not relating to socks, I typed these words to Donna yesterday. "The older our children get the more I need my husband's wisdom and sense of humor". I am so thankful for a wise and witty husband to get me through the teen age years! :) Laughter is indeed very good medicine. Isn't it Donna?

*****

Lauren started swim lessons this week at Aquatots. It is a brand new indoor facility with a heated pool. I am determined to have that child swimming independent of any type of floatation device by June. I bribed her with a special lunch date and a visit to one of her favorite stores. Maybe she'll pick this darling outfit for her teddy bear.

Have a great weekend!

Any big plans?

Who's In Charge?

More from Called to Obedience

God's Purpose for Suffering and Adversity:

1. For His eternal purposes (2 Cor 4:17)

2. To bring you to a greater dependency upon Christ so you will know Him more intimately (2 Cor. 12:9,10; Phil. 3:10)

3. To teach you, experientially, that God's grace and love will sustain, uphold, enfold you in the midst of the trial. (Isa. 41:10)

4. To be conformed to the image of Christ; to build your character. (Rom. 8:29, 5:3,4)

5. To share in Christ's sufferings and for His sake (Phil 1:29, 3:10)

6. To share the comfort with others that you have received from Christ; to minister more effectively for His kingdom (2 Cor 1:3-7)

7. To learn more of God's Word (Psalm 119:71)

8. To produce more fruit than you are already yielding (John 15:2)

9. To realize that inner and eternal blessings and sometimes, outward blessings are God's rewards as a result of trials (Matt. 5:1-12, James 1:12)

Forgiveness

"See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many." Hebrews 12:15

From Called to Obedience by Howie Dowell and Dennie Dowell Patton

A. When do you forgive? In prayer (Mark 11:25)

B. Whom do you forgive? Anyone you have anything against (Mark 11:25)

C. How are you to forgive? (Col. 3:12; Eph. 4:30-32)

1. As Christ has forgiven you.

2. Completely.

3. Repeatedly for the same sins.

D. Why do you forgive? (Matt. 6:14,15)

1. It is a command of God.

2. Your relationship with God is hindered if you do not forgive others.

1-2-3-4 Memory Outline

1. Forgive the offender, not verbally, but in prayer (Mark 11:25)

2. Grab hold of the truth that God has ordained this situation and thank God for this difficulty. (1 Cor. 10:13;1 Thess. 5:18)

3. Ask: "What is God trying to teach me?"

4. Ask: "How can I obey God in this situation? (John 14:15)

"And so, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. And beyond all these things, put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity." Col 3:12-14

*******

By obeying these scriptures we can find true peace, does that mean we forget sin or ignore it? NO! But the verse above clearly states that Christ forgave us therefore we should forgive others.

Simple and yet difficult.

It is always better to obey.

Speaking of.....

Valley of Vision

If you followed the link to Sovereign Grace Ministries (SGM) Radio you would have heard music from their CD titled Valley of Vision. The music is based off of the book titled Valley of Vision which is a collection of puritan prayers and devotions.

From the SGM web page:

Puritans like John Bunyan, Thomas Watson, Richard Baxter, and Isaac Watts knew their hearts, their Bibles, and their God much better than we do. Many of them wrote down their prayers not to be published, but to assess their own spiritual growth and to encourage themselves in times of spiritual dryness. These prayers reveal a personal, humble, passionate relationship with an awesome God, a living Savior, and an active Spirit. Reading their meditations inspires us to pursue the same level of reality as we worship God.

Last night I started reading a book by John MacArthur called "Hard To Believe" and interestingly enough I came across this:

Lord, high and holy, meek and lowly, let me learn by paradox that the way down is the way up, that to be low is to be high, that the broken heart is the healed heart, the the contrite spirit is the rejoicing spirit, that the repenting soul is the victorious soul, that to have nothing is to possess everything, that to bear the cross is to wear the crown, that to give is to receive. Let me find thy light in my darkness thy joy in my sorrow, thy grace in my sin, thy riches in my poverty, thy glory in my valley, thy life in my death

From Valley of Vision, Arthur Bennett,ed.

I don't own this book but you can bet I will very soon!

I also plan on buying a few cd's from SGM.

Sleep

What's that?

Oh boy am I tired. Yes, I got on this computer to let you know how tired and worn out I am. :) I am alive, just tired. Some of it illness induced, some of it Nascar induced (that's for another post, redneck) and some of it Lauren induced.

Have you ever wanted to escape to a hotel room for a night or six? I have and right now is one of those times I wish I could go away and sleep. I know that if I did go away for one night I would a) end up with the party animals next door b) not be able to sleep because I am now 41 and you know what happens after 40 or c) get there, settle in and wonder what on earth I was doing, miss my family and not be able to sleep anyway!!

I guess I'll just stay home and love my family that God has blessed me with and persevere through this short season of illness and sleeplessness.

Praising God.

Is There a Doctor in the House?

I have been corrected (in the most gracious and loving way) by Dr. Amy at Good Soil. I told my children that the little flappy thing hanging down in the back of their throat was the epiglottis when in fact it is called the UVULA!! I have to admit the picture I posted confused me but at the time it was the best I could find and I was absolutely convinced that it was called the epiglottis. It's all coming back to me now, really.

CHECK THIS OUT!

I stand corrected and will have to inform my two daughters who were so curious about that little thing in the back of their throats.

**Amy, remind me of your training. I know attended med school and I think you did your residency in OB/GYN but later decided to leave the field and stay home with your babies. Yeah! Consider this an interview and tell us all about yourself in my comments. :)

**Amy and I have a special connection....we got to spend some time together at Starbucks a few years ago when I was in Dallas! What a treat!

*********************

Will you pray for my little Dani. She has a horrible virus. Her fever is very high and she is soooo uncomfortable. We were up all night dealing with the croup.

Thanks.

Good Question!

Tuesday Morning

Lauren: Mommy, I'm drawing a picture of a whale!

Me: Oh that's great sweetie.

Lauren: What's that thing called in the back of your throat that hangs down?

Me: What? Huh? (finally looking up from my paperwork) Oh, that's called an epiglottis.

Lauren: OK, well, I just drew an epiglottis on the whale.

Me: Really, you did? An epiglottis? Great!

Tuesday Night (and I'm not making this stuff up)

I spot Hannah in her bathroom with a flashlight looking down her throat. I think that is odd but keep moving....

Hannah: Hey Mom? What's that thing called in the back of your throat?

Me: An epiglottis (not missing a beat)

Hannah: Cool, I'm going to look it up on the internet.

Me: Go right ahead.

This makes me happy. I love science, especially anatomy/physiology. :)

April in Arizona

I have Pooh Bear on my brain today. It is very windy!

From: Winnie The Pooh and the Blustery Day
Written by: Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman
Performed by: Sterling Holloway [Pooh]

Hum dum dum ditty dum
Hum dum dum

Oh the wind is lashing lustily
And the trees are thrashing thrustily
And the leaves are rustling gustily
So it's rather safe to say
That it seems that it may turn out to be
It feels that it will undoubtedly
It looks like a rather blustery day, today
It sounds that it may turn out to be
Feels that it will undoubtedly
Looks like a rather blustery day today

I'm not particularly fond the this wind but I do quite enjoy reading Pooh Bear!

Heather

There is a sweet lady in the blog world by the name of Heather that could really use your prayers. Would you please pray for her, she has recently been diagnosed with a brain tumor. She's a mom like us with little children and a husband that adores her. Her faith in Jesus is inspiring and her strength is admirable.

Another awesome lady is going to be raising money for Heather and her family to help with some of the costs of this ordeal.

Would you first and foremost pray for Heather?

And if you feel lead would you consider sending a little money their way?

It is at times like this that I love the internet. It's a neat community.

C.B.F.

We stopped at the gas station on our way up to the Hassayempa River to fill up the truck and the Rhino. Six children were crammed in to the back two seats (they're getting big) and the quarters were close. Any of you with several children know what happens when children are left to themselves for a few minutes in close quarters and within touching distance of each other. Well, I still don't really know what happened but what I do know is that when I came back to the truck there was a story to tell. I was gone approximately 4 minutes. It seems that James (13) couldn't stand the temptation to tease his baby sister, Lauren (4) and when I walked up to the car I was informed that James was in fact a......

"COCONUT BUTT FACE"

according to his baby sister!! (an original name FWIW)

Dave was in hysterics, as was the rest of the car, and Lauren was crying because she was just sure she was going to get in really big trouble for calling her brother a Coconut Butt Face. While I was preparing my "you should never call your brother names, that's not nice, bad girl speech", my husband was repeating the name over and over and smacking James upside the head.

Dave reassured Lauren that a) she was not in trouble b) he loved the name and c) James was (and is) indeed a Coconut Butt Face.

So much for my speech.

Hallelujah!

I want to share with you an old, old hymn. It is one of my favorites.

Listen Here

Low in the Grave He Lay
Robert Lowry

Low in the grave He lay, Jesus my Savior,
Waiting the coming day, Jesus my Lord!

Up from the grave He arose,
With a mighty triumph o’er His foes,
He arose a Victor from the dark domain,
And He lives forever, with His saints to reign.
He arose! He arose!
Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Vainly they watch His bed, Jesus my Savior;
Vainly they seal the dead, Jesus my Lord!

Up from the grave He arose,
With a mighty triumph o’er His foes,
He arose a Victor from the dark domain,
And He lives forever, with His saints to reign.
He arose! He arose!
Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Death cannot keep its Prey, Jesus my Savior;
He tore the bars away, Jesus my Lord!

Up from the grave He arose,
With a mighty triumph o’er His foes,
He arose a Victor from the dark domain,
And He lives forever, with His saints to reign.
He arose! He arose!
Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Have a blessed Resurrection Day my dear blog friends and family!

He is risen indeed!

Home, Sweet Home
John Howard Payne
(1791-1852)

Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam,
Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home;
A charm from the sky seems to hallow us there,
Which, seek through the world, is ne'er met with elsewhere.
Home, home, sweet, sweet home!
There's no place like home, oh, there's no place like home!

An exile from home, splendor dazzles in vain;
Oh, give me my lowly thatched cottage again!
The birds singing gayly, that come at my call --
Give me them -- and the peace of mind, dearer than all!
Home, home, sweet, sweet home!
There's no place like home, oh, there's no place like home!

I gaze on the moon as I tread the drear wild,
And feel that my mother now thinks of her child,
As she looks on that moon from our own cottage door
Thro' the woodbine, whose fragrance shall cheer me no more.
Home, home, sweet, sweet home!
There's no place like home, oh, there's no place like home!

How sweet 'tis to sit 'neath a fond father's smile,
And the caress of a mother to soothe and beguile!
Let others delight mid new pleasures to roam,
But give me, oh, give me, the pleasures of home.
Home, home, sweet, sweet home!
There's no place like home, oh, there's no place like home!

To thee I'll return, overburdened with care;
The heart's dearest solace will smile on me there;
No more from that cottage again will I roam;
Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home.
Home, home, sweet, sweet, home!
There's no place like home, oh, there's no place like home!

Welcome home dear sister! You were missed!
Love, Janet

Biblical Parenting

I am looking forward to this series at Pulpit Magazine. So far what I've read is very good Biblical advise and information.

And so far I give them a hearty AMEN!

I found that button at Pyromaniacs and that is probably why that poor child has the logo on her darling pink t-shirt. :)

Anyway, it is good stuff over there and I hope it encourages you today and the rest of the month.

Just Janet Makeover!!

Well? What do you think?

You all know this is not something I could ever do but I found someone who could! Her name is Jules and she writes her own blog called Everyday Mommy. I have had fun getting to know her by reading her blog and now via email.

I gave Jules some very general ideas; shabby chic, pastel, welcoming etc. and over the course of a few emails (and a lot of patience on her part) we narrowed it down to an antique tea cup and a full bunch of flowers. Wow. Did she deliver! I am absolutely thrilled and cannot recommend Jules' services enough. Be sure to visit her site and check out her other designs.

THANKS JULES!!

Reminiscing

I am having a great time "following" Donna through Europe. Today she is still enjoying Florence and I have been living vicariously through her. I even dug out my diary from my time in Europe, more specifically Florence. I was there on Friday, June 17, 1988. It is shocking to admit that it was almost 20 years ago, OUCH! Here is what I wrote as a young 22 year old:

We arrived in Florence with no problems-trudged through an open market place with our heavy luggage to find our hotel (Hotel Europa). It is a great place and a great location. We were off to discover Florence. We found the Duomo and Basilica and were amazed at the size and beauty (a lot of construction going on though). We went across the street to a museum and saw Michelangelo's Pieta- it is a statue of Nicodemus holding Jesus with Mary Magdalene and Mary. Awesome!! Next we were off to the street markets to find some good deals on leather jackets, gloves, purses and bags. They were everywhere! I purchased 2 pair of gloves for L52.000 which equals $40.00. Great deal. We grabbed dinner at a pizzeria- had pasta- bad waiter and off to explore more of Florence. We found delicious gelato and roamed the nicer streets of Florence. Then it was off to Hotel Europa to catch some zzzzzz's.

Florence

UPDATE: Monday morning here. Donna commented on her own blog!! She has internet service in the lobby of her hotel. Woo hoo!!! All is well and Paris was wonderful. Am I just too weird to keep going back to her blog to check the comments? Old habits die hard. Anyway, it paid off this time, she paid Quiet Life a little visit.

It is the wee early morning in Florence, Italy right now and Donna is finishing the night on her overnight train ride. Janice and I took an overnight train from the South of France to Paris (I think, my memory is horrible). It is a great way to save time. I remember worrying about who was going to be in our sleeping car with us but two elderly Europeans were more afraid of us than we were of them.

Here is a link to the Weather Underground. You can see the current conditions in Florence and get the current time. I love that site and used it often when I was teaching Apologia Physical Science last year.

I'm sure today will be a day of museums and site seeing for Donna et al. I remember well standing in line for the museum in the rain and then shopping in a street market filled with beautiful leather!!

Paris!

Donna, Patrick, Emma and friends are enjoying Paris right now as I type. It is Friday evening in Paris and I'm sure they have had a full afternoon. Perhaps they've already seen these amazing sites!!

For those of you that don't know this is Emma's homeschool graduation gift. She has been the most amazing homeschool student! She is a very hard worker and very self motivated making Donna's job very easy. Donna and Patrick wanted to reward her for her diligence and commitment to classical education. Sooo...off to France and Italy where she can see and feel and smell and touch much of what she has only read about.

I am going to have fun with this web page. I can keep track of them a little better. I was hoping Patrick would take a lap top and get Donna blogging from France but I don't think he did. And he's a techie....he should be ashamed of himself. :) Doesn't he know how badly we are going to miss her daily posts?

Please pray for their travels, for sound sleep, for safety and most of all FUN!

What??

Blogger is freaking out. Please excuse the mess. I'll try to fix the links later when I have time.

UPDATE: I fixed the links but the quote is still not cooperating. Anyway, I think it's readable now.

A Must Read!

I hope you'll take the time to read this incredible article about the providence and sovereignty of God written by a man named Mike Evans.

I commented to Cindy when I first read this article, that this is a great encouragement to pray for our children.

Here is JC Ryle on prayer for our children:

Without the blessing of the Lord, your best endeavours will do no good. He
has the hearts of all men in His hands, and except He touch the hearts of
your children by His Spirit, you will weary yourself to no purpose. Water,
therefore, the seed you sow on their minds with unceasing prayer. The Lord
is far more willing to hear than we to pray; far more ready to give blessings than we to ask them ; — but He loves to be entreated for them. And I set this matter of prayer before you, as the top-stone and seal of all you do. I suspect the child of many prayers is seldom cast away.

Look upon your children as Jacob did on his; he tells Esau they are "the children which God hath graciously given thy servant" (Gen. 33:5). Look on them as Joseph did on his; he told his father, "They are the sons whom God hath given me" (Gen. 48:9). Count them with the Psalmist to be "an heritage and reward from the Lord" (Ps. 127:3). And then ask the Lord, with a holy boldness, to be gracious and merciful to His own gifts. Mark how Abraham intercedes for Ishmael, because he loved him, "Oh that Ishmael might live before thee" (Gen. 17:18). See how Manoah speaks to the angel about Samson, "How shall we order the child, and how shall we do unto him?" (Judg. 13:12). Observe how tenderly Job cared for his children’s souls, "He offered
burnt-offerings according to the number of them all, for he said, It may be
my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually" (Job 1:5). Parents, if you love your children, go and do likewise. You cannot name their names before the mercy-seat too often.

Amen!

Sarah Hope

Here is how Sarah spent her afternoon. It was an early release day from school and rainy today. What is especailly sweet is that Sarah first had to CLEAN the big girl's room before she could set up her tea party. And trust me, that is not an easy task.

Hannah graciously accepted her invitation.

Second Chances

I'd like you to meet some very good friends of mine. You'll need a little background information first.

I met John in the Spring of 1988. We were attending the University of Arizona and shared the same major so we had several classes together. (he slept through Analytical Chemistry and got an A, I stayed awake and didn't) In the fall of 1988 I ran in to John on campus and he invited me to his college group's fall square dance (not as a date, just as friends). This is where it gets amazing and this is where the Holy Spirit worked....I showed up! By myself and very scared. I didn't know a soul except John. When I arrived John introduced me to a very cute roommate of his and the rest is history, in fact, 17 years of history as of March 24. :) Ok, back to the story. I was a baby Christian and spent my Sundays at either a Lutheran church or a charismatic church, to say the least I was very confused. The square dance was on a Saturday night, I joined John and Dave at their church on Sunday and became a 'regular'. Within a few months I made a public confession of my faith and was baptized. Karen came in to the picture shortly after that time, John and Karen shared a long distance courtship (she was at Biola) that most of us homeschool moms would envy. They got married 3 months after us in June of 1990.

All that to say that John and Karen are very precious friends of ours and we are so thankful to the Lord for blessing us with their friendship.

Now John and Karen do humanitarian work in Kunming, China. John is a pediatrician and Karen works very hard at home caring for their 4 children and spends time caring for children at an orphanage. I asked if they would mind me sharing a recent email with you.

As I look at our six years of life in China, (yes, almost 6 years!!) many memories of joy and delight come flooding into my mind. However, some memories of regret and discouragement come as well.

One of the most discouraging series of events took place in the summer of 2003 when a 19 month old boy named Wu Xiao came to see me at the clinic. Wu Xiao had bright eyes and was as sharp as could be. (see photo) His language was quite precocious in two dialects. His Mandarin was better than mine.

But Wu Xiao could not walk. Birth injury had left him with severe cerebral palsy primarily affecting his legs. A CT scan of his head clearly demonstrated where an area of his brain had essentially dissolved after his birth trauma.

We started Wu Xiao in the physical rehabilitation program at Project Grace, and his progress was remarkable. Within a week, he was able to stand by bracing himself with his arms.

Then something happened. Wu Xiao’s family took him out of rehab and had him admitted to a local hospital. There, local doctors claimed they could heal Wu Xiao by injecting fetal stem cells into the injured area of his brain. Instead of healing, Wu Xiao developed encephalitis, a severe infection of his brain. After several weeks in the hospital, he and his family just disappeared.

For almost four years, I thought he was dead . . . until this past week. There he was, sitting in the exam room with his dad. I could hardly contain myself! His language is now a bit slurred, his eyes are crossed, and he has an ugly scar across his temple. He still cannot walk. But he is alive; a precious little boy and the apple of his father’s eye.

Wu Xia is now back in rehab learning to stand. I am so thankful for a second chance to help this boy.

It would be easy to chastise Wu Xiao’s family for the damage and delay this boy has suffered. But how often do I do the same thing? The Great Physician has clearly prescribed what is best for me. Yet in unbelief or impatience, I walk away. And just like Wu Xiao, I bear the scars, the consequences of my disobedience. I too am grateful for the mercy, grace, and patience of the Master Healer.

Please remember Wu Xiao and his family. May they come to know the Great Physician who can bring true healing.

Would you pray for my friends and the amazing work they do in China?

Would you pray for little Wu Xiao?

In A Hurry?

I sampled the most delicious pasta dish at Costco today. It's by Monterey Gourmet Foods, from their One Step Gourmet division. The one I bought is not mentioned or pictured on the website but let me tell ya, it's a keeper! It's called Cajun Style Blackened Chicken with Penne Pasta. The four children that were with me at the time loved it and begged me to buy it. So I did. The (sometimes cranky) sampler lady warned us that it was VERY spicy and to that we say BRING IT ON! We love spicy.

I challenge Kim to make her own, fresh, cheaper and healthier version. I know she can do it! :) She's amazing.

Now some of you with a gazillion children and/or a house full of boys (hehe) will have to buy two or more. It serves only four.

So, if you're in a hurry, fix this up for the family, add a fresh salad and a nice baguette and you're good to go.

I hope you can find the spicy one!

Spring has Sprung!

We have been enjoying the most beautiful Spring weather. It has been unusually hot. My children have been swimming, the air has had to be on in the house and car, flip flops are in full use and our yard looks fresh and new.

Here is what's happening out front.

A Shammel Ash

I wish you could join me for a glass of iced tea. My front door is open too, come on in!

My sweet alyssum and petunias made it through our very cold 'winter', all I had to do is add two pink geraniums (healthy and pretty from Target).

*************

And something I've never done before....a quote from Shakespeare:

"April hath put a spirit of youth in everything."

I agree with and understand this quote! Even if it is March. :P

Hello!

I have been encouraged this morning by two different posts and I wanted to direct you to both of them. Each post in its special way proclaims the simplicity of the gospel of Jesus Christ and what is really important.

I hope you'll enjoy reading these today.

The Amazing Grace webpage.

I have not seen the movie yet but two ladies in the blog world have given it great reviews.

Carmon writes about it here.

Found at Challies.Com

From the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - R. Albert Mohler Jr., president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, is scheduled to appear tonight on CNN's Larry King Live. Mohler will discuss the alleged discovery of the "tomb" of Jesus and his family by archaeologists and genetic scientists. A documentary "The Lost Tomb of Jesus," which is said to present the evidence, is scheduled to air next week on the Discovery Channel. Scheduled to appear with Mohler are James Cameron, executive producer of the documentary; Simcha Jacobovici, the director; and James Tabor, chair of religious studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Larry King Live airs at 9:00 Eastern Time on CNN. The segment on the "Lost Tomb of Jesus" is scheduled to air tonight following an interview with First Lady Laura Bush.

Yesterday Dr. James White of Alpha and Omega Ministries warned us of this documentary.

We had the privilege of having Dr. James White teach our adult Sunday school class and during the morning worship service. If you are not already familiar with Dr. James White's ministry I cannot encourage you enough to become very familiar with it. We have personally known Dr. White for many years and now his Alpha and Omega Ministry office is on our church property. Remember how he got broken in to a few months back? Yeah, that's really bad. Our church is not in the best area of town. I sat under his teaching yesterday for about 2 hours and learned more about Islam than I have in my entire life.

Be sure to watch Larry King Live tonight. And don't believe the Hollywood lies.

Bless Him

Charles Spurgeon on Psalm 100.

"Be thankful unto him. Let the praise be in your heart as well as on your tongue, and let it all be for him to whom it all belongs. And bless his name. He blessed you, bless him in return; bless his name, his character, his person. Whatever he does, be sure that you bless him for it; bless him when he takes away as well as when he gives; bless him as long as you live, under all circumstances; bless him in all his attributes, from whatever point of view you consider him."

We are thankful.

Here is an update on our friend Joshua's health.

Hello Family and Friends,

We wanted to let all of you know about the good news we have received regarding Joshua’s most recent tests – everything is clear and there doesn't seem to be any return of the cancer!

We know that so many of you have continued to pray for Josh and we are so thankful that God has healed his body. He is back to his old self, including a new head of hair! He has gone through such a growth spurt that we can hardly keep up with clothing and shoes for him.

We enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving, Christmas and birthday celebration for Josh. He turned 13 on December 27th. Several of his buddies even waited to celebrate their birthdays so that they could all do it together when Josh was finished with treatment.

We don’t have to return to the hospital until the end of May, at which time they will repeat all of the tests again. I will be sure to let everyone know those results.

With much love,

Mike and Stacey

Just look at that beautiful wavy hair. It's downright curly!! All the moms insist on touching it and all the young ladies admire it from afar. ;-)

We love you Josh!

Sisters, Sisters

Sing it with me...

Nancy, Me, Sue and my twin Janice

Sue came for a little visit this weekend. We had a wonderful time. She arrived Saturday morning and spent some time with Nancy and two of her daughters. They came to my house for dinner and more visiting. Janice and I made a delicious dinner for everyone. Janice's vegetable kabobs were out of this world!! Definitely the hit of the night. Well, my homemade key lime pies went over pretty well too. Sue turned the big 5-0 in October, so in typical Glyman fashion we celebrated 4 months late. Susie enjoyed opening a few gifts and I bought and arranged these flowers for both of us to enjoy. They we're in her honor because she couldn't take them home.

We all met at The Spa at Camelback Inn, aka heaven on earth, on Sunday . We had lunch, spa treatments, we sat in the steam room and took hot showers. Nancy took 3 showers while she was there, isn't that funny. :) After the spa time we went to Nordstoms at the Scottsdale Fashion Square and did a little shopping. We had fun looking at purses and shoes. I particularly loved the Burberry purses but they don't go well with my pizza budget. Either do the $525 shoes, gimme my New Balance, thankyouverymuch.

I do like this little number.

After shopping we had a nice dinner at a hot spot in Phoenix called La Grande Orange. It's all the rage. It has a very European feel. There is a market attached to the restaurant and it has all sorts of specialty food items, flowers, wines and very cute La Grande t-shits. More importantly we were able to sit and visit some more.

It was a wonderful visit.
Susie, you need to come more often!!

My Little Peach Tree

My internet friends that live in the South might laugh at this little tree and to be honest, it is nothing special except for a few weeks while it is in bloom. It bears very small fruit and the minute the birds discover it the fruit is devoured.

It's a pretty little tree right now and maybe someday it will amount to something special. We'll just have to wait and see...

Valentine's Day

Curtsy to The Common Room: Happy Valentines' Day

Make yours here.

I am determined to get through this day without eating even one piece of candy. Our house is swarming with the stuff. Wish me luck.

Dinner tonight for all 6 of my sweeties:

Salmon
Garden Salad
Baked Asparagus
Dinner rolls and
A heart shaped chocolate cake

Have a blessed day.

UPDATE: I have permission from my husband to share with you what he wrote in my Valentine's card. I read it after he left for work and stood in amazement.

"I fell into a pile of you and got love all over me" Love Dave.

WHAT? What is that? Huh. Weirdo. lol

I googled it and found out that it is a (horrible) title of a country western song.

Well, that makes sense.

My dear husband heard it quoted earlier this week while he was in Dallas on business.

My sweet romantic husband.

Great Tunes

HT or (as Kim says) a curtsy to my daughter Hannah for letting us know about Corinne Bailey Rae. I love it that my kiddos are old enough to clue me in to great music (sometimes it's not so great). Corinne's web page is really cute. I like the butterflies.

This is part of her bio.:
"I started off singing in church, I suppose, but people think it must have been a gospel church because of the whole, you know, black assumption," she says in reference to her mixed-race background. "But it wasn't gospel at all, it was just your regular brethren church, very middle-class, where we would sing these harmonies every Sunday. It was always my favourite part of the service, the singing."

I'd classify her sound as Jazz/R&B/Soul.

I think I prefer her upbeat music.

I've downloaded these three songs to my iPod:

Like A Star

Trouble Sleeping

Put Your Records On

Here is the amazon link.

Let me know what you think.

The Real Deal

Dy and MFS posted pictures of themselves that show the real person behind the blog. I think it is a great idea. So, here it is. This picture was taken last spring in San Diego, that is why I look happy and relaxed. I chopped my husband out of the picture but you can see his shiny forehead if you look closely. :) I decided to post this one because I think it is the closest to how I look on a daily basis. I love my jean jacket.

I have met Dy in real life and let me tell ya she is as beautiful in person as she is in those pictures! And MFS, well, I'm not sure if I've ever seen a full picture of her face (she's usually hiding behind a book) so it is really fun to meet her, go take a look! I hope more ladies in the blogsphere will do this, it really is fun to get to know the gals!

Thanks for visiting my blog.

Powerful

From Keep A Quiet Heart
By Elisabeth Elliot

An Old Prayer

"Christians in the Orthodox Church use a prayer called the Jesus Prayer. Sometime they pray it in the rhythm of breathing, learning in this way almost to "pray without ceasing". The words are simple, but they cover everything we need to ask for ourselves and others. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us."

"The Jesus Prayer was one my husband Add and I often used together when he was dying of cancer, when we seemed to have "used up" all the other prayers. I recommend it to you."

Lord, have mercy on us.

Da Bears!!!

I am a huge Chicago Bear's fan. Always have been.

Even when we moved to Wisconsin, I cheered for the Bears.

I am excited about the Superbowl. It appears that both of the head coaches are godly Christian men and that many of the players have been positively influenced by these men.

I love anyone with the name Lovie.

Go Bears.

"Not My Best"

When Hannah was little I would ask her to vacuum and she would say "Um, well, vacuuming is not my best" meaning, I don't really feel like vacuuming right now and I don't really like it either. I would also hear those three words when asked if she liked a particular meal I prepared. "No thank you, it's not my best". As you can imagine that little saying has stuck around our house. Janice likes to say it once in a while too.

Remember the Bolognese Pasta recipe I posted here?

Well, it's not my best.

I ended up adding all sorts of stuff to it to add flavor and spice. I added a few teaspoons of Italian seasoning mix, red pepper flakes and extra diced tomatoes. Two nights later when Dave and I ate it for leftovers I added a small can of tomato sauce and another can of diced tomatoes. I had so much left I gave my friend Stacey a big helping and she added Classico sauce to jazz it up.

I thought I should give a report since I posted a recipe I hadn't even tried before and it wasn't my best.

On My Knees

Will you join me in praying for Ruthanne. She is in labor right now and on her way to the hospital in traffic.

I followed their last labor and delivery. Her husband Jay uses a Blackberry (I think) and gives very regular updates from the hospital. It's great fun!

So pray, pray, pray.

This is blessing #9 for the Shepherds. :)
